Supporting vulnerable people and children around the world ~taking all my chances along with a strong belief~

This is Shinji Fukushima, the founder and the president of Volunteer Platform.
I would like to introduce myself and the organization.

My Determination to work in International Cooperation

The origin of my determination to work in international cooperation goes back to my childhood.
I grew up in a situation where my family could get killed at any time.  My father was an alcoholic and always brandished a knife and wooden sword toward us. Policemen came to our house to stop him every month. Due to this distressing experience, I felt deeply unhappy about the unchangeable reality in which I was born, and also wished someone would help us. However, no one came to arrest him or rescue us.

As I grew up, I came to know through the media that many people in developing countries were facing tragic situations of persistent poverty. I saw people and children starving to death, begging on streets for a living, and losing their arms and legs after being blown up by landmines. There were even children who lost their parents in conflicts at a very young age. I realized that there was also a severe reality out there which a number of people and children were facing and experiencing.

Although I had a completely different environment and background, I could not consider those vulnerable people as living in a different world, having no connection with me as I also faced an unchangeable reality where I could not beg for any help.

I thought that those people were all craving to escape from me as I also faced an unchangeable reality where I could not beg for any help.

I thought that those people were all craving to escape from such oppressive situations as soon as possible.

Moreover, I felt that I had a high we chance to make a living and get various opportunities in life just because of the fact that I lived in Japan and could have an education. I asked myself the question “who can save these people from a negative chain of events?” and the answer I got was that we, who have a desire and capability to take action and have the duty to save these people from pain and sadness.

“I will save all those people who are in difficult situations.” – was what I decided when I was in my childhood.

The Establishment of Volunteer Platform ~From Determination to Action~

I wondered how meaningful my life would be if I had helped or improved a situation for even a single person who faced a life crisis in a difficult situation.
That help was something I had been waiting for throughout my childhood, and actually countless children and people currently need it. Consequently, I considered an appropriate way to support as many people who faced critical problems in privation.

There are many possible approaches in international cooperation, in terms of “politics”, “economics” and “education”.
However, most of these approaches have issues related to sustainability and efficiency. So then I figured that profitability and IT would be the method to solve these problems. At that time Social Business was not common but I assessed that Social Business and the usage of IT could be a solution towards eliminating the obstacles to international cooperation and so I developed strategies to carry out our service.

Subsequently, in 2003, Volunteer Platform was established with a vision of  “supporting vulnerable people and children around the world” and incorporated in 2011.
All members are currently working towards achieving this goal.

A Challenge toward a Better World

The economist Jeffrey Sachs says that we can end extreme poverty in our generation for the first time in human history – which I also agree with. (However, poverty might occur at local levels sometimes.)

From a realistic point of view, ending poverty is now much more realistic compared to those days when people used to ride rickshaws or no one could imagine or think of ways to get to the moon.

Economic estimates and methods to achieve this goal have been specifically calculated. Now, we are just waiting for the answer of when, who and how it will be done.

From an ideal point of view, humans have the ability and potential to overcome difficulty and we have always turned the impossible into the possible. Also everyone wishes the world to be a peaceful place and live happily. I believe that this common desire will open up possibilities for to solve critical problems in the future. When that hope becomes realized, this world will have a brighter future.

I will dedicate all of my life to create a world where all social issues, relating to “poverty”, “human rights”, “conflict” and “environmental problems” are completely solved.
We will continue to tackle those issues with a strong belief.

This page allows you to read further which the organization aims for –  “vision and future

Best regards,
