When I became a high school student, I really wanted to go abroad and have international exchanges. While I was forced to give up because of the corona virus, I knew about the existence of Borapura's online SDGs overseas volunteers through the introduction of the school. In this program, we learned SDGs and educated elementary school students in Cambodia. My dream for the future is to be a school teacher. That's why I decided to participate because I thought I could make use of it in my future.
I learned from the beginning of the program that the shortage of teachers is a big problem in Cambodia. In this program , one teacher led all the children. I decided to participate because of my future, but knowing that made me want to contribute to them as much as possible.
The education system is well-developed in Japan, and I haven't felt much inconvenience in education. The employment rate is high. However, in Cambodia, the enrollment rate of primary education is 90%, but the enrollment rate of students remaining until the final grade due to domestic work and enrollment in secondary education is less than half. Also, the number of subjects is small. It seems that the level of teachers is low and there are many problems with teaching methods. Not only Cambodia but also the world is full of children who are not well educated. For such children, Sri Lanka has introduced an online learning system that does not depend on the quality of teachers, and seems to have achieved results in improving academic ability. Therefore, I think that online education should be more and more popular. However, labor shortages have become a major issue in Japan as well. So why not make high school students educators for them and get them educated online? Most Japanese students have graduated from secondary education. Isn't it possible to teach children in developing countries what is up to secondary education? Cross-country online education is not a major. Moreover, it is not a business that can be done individually. However, having high school students play the role of teacher has many advantages in both directions. Make up for the labor shortage of educators. You can learn about various disciplines, including sub-subjects. Even children who are far from school or cannot attend due to family work can be educated. You can also develop the ability of high school students to see the world from a global perspective, communication skills, and language skills. In today's information-oriented society, we should continue to use new technologies.
When I interacted with Cambodian elementary school students in English this time, I felt that they had a lot of motivation to learn. That is why I strongly felt that it was necessary to fully bring out their abilities. At the time of this exchange, all the local elementary school students were smiling. I felt like I was enjoying studying from the bottom of my heart. As a high school student who is helpless and immature in society, I was really proud to have helped someone. At the same time, I felt that I had to thank myself for being in a privileged environment for studying now.
There are not enough facilities to receive sufficient education yet. In addition to securing the number of educators, there are many things that need to be done, such as building schools and establishing networks. However, even in Japan, there were many things I could do right now to achieve the goals of the SDGs. I would like to participate again if I have the opportunity to be involved in overseas education using zoom or teams. The world needs to work together to reach the 17 goals, not thinking of it as someone else's affairs.
