『Equal opportunity』
I think it is difficult to give equal opportunity to all people, now. It has become problems because there is discrimination and prejudice between men and women, people with and without disability, LGBTQ and those who don’t. I strongly think people should give all people an equal opportunity. For this time, I will write about “Gender equality”.
Most people have probably seen toilet marks once. Men’s toilet marks are people who wear pants and the color is mostly blue. And women’s toilet marks are people who wear skirts and the color is mostly red. I think it is a good idea because even people who can’t read letters can understand it. However, toilet marks make stereotypes. Then many boys chose blue and black school bags and girls chose red or pink school bags. Gradually some girls began to choose blue, brown, and black school bags but it is not easy for boys to choose pink school bags. In 2019, when people asked 3000 Japanese boys “What is the color that school bag you want?”, only 4.0 percent said “Pink”. Boys can choose pink school bags of course but, if a boy will get a pink school bag, he might be bullied because of stereotypes. Toilet marks make not only this school bag problem but also school uniform problem. Most people might have not seen a boy student who wears a skirt. There are few boy students who wear skirts but it is not widespread now. Gender neutral toilets were developed but stereotypes are remaining.
I think it is impossible for women to give birth without taking holidays. So, people mustn’t take the opportunity to work again from women. In Japan, the shape of a graph of a relationship between the age of women and the proportion of working women, looks like the letter “M”. It shows people that the graph has two mountains. And the second of the two mountains is lower than the first one. This is because, when women give birth, they take holidays, and many women can not go back to their workplace because of parenting. The problem is men can work without holidays but women can’t work without holidays when they have a baby. This is inequality. Also, many people have a stereotype that men work and women do house work at home. So, it is not easy for women to get an opportunity to go back to their workplace. However, gradually men also started to take childcare leave. In 2020, a men politician, Shinjiro Koizumi took childcare leave and he tried to change people’s stereotypes but it was not enough. Some people said unlike him, the civilians can’t get a salary when men take childcare leave. So, politicians should make a new law that men can get a salary when men take childcare leave. However, I think because of his actions, it has become easier for men to take childcare leave than before. And I think it is important to try to change the stereotype by taking some actions.
Also in 2020, Kamala Harris became the first woman to be visa president, and this is the first time that all of the communication team members are women. Many media outlets talk about that news with the word, “First”. Certainly, it is a wonderful thing but, I want the media to not mention too much the word, “First” because, people might can’t think it is normal for women to play an active role in the White House. Many people make the stereotype that it is difficult for women to get a chance to work at not only White House but also other country’s political industries.
I introduced three things about gender. Biologically different men and women, but it is wrong to be unequal, such as whether or not there is an opportunity. To solve this inequality, all people should think and change the stereotype so, I hope people who read this essay tell the stories to others and think with others. Then if people can solve this inequality, next people should think how to get rid of prejudice not only between men and women but also people with and without disability, LGBTQ and those who don’t. I want all people to think about what they can do, regardless of age, work, country, or gender. Then I imagine a world where all people have opportunity equally, and I’m thinking what I can do to make that world. Until I can live in that world.
