『Overcome the current situation 』
I like Dr. King’s words, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” And the future I envision is one in which the whole world is one. Now, the world is facing a lot of problems such as discrimination, poverty and conflict. I believe that such a future awaits us only if we overcome these problems. And the solution that I have is for the world to become more connected. But it sounds too much for each individual to handle. So, I think we should learn about the current state of the world and try to do something about it.
Firstly, about discrimination. I think inequality and discrimination are different things. No matter how much we try to eliminate inequality, some level of inequality will always arise. But discrimination always involves people’s will, and if we want to eliminate it, we should be able to eliminate it. Of course, I think it is necessary to try to reduce the disparity in inequality, but in that case, a large amount of authority is required, so I will not discuss it here. Now, discrimination occurs based on skin color, gender, and disability status. Don’t you think this is strange? Also, don’t you find it strange that there are people who don’t think this is strange? I think this is strange, so I don’t discriminate and I do everything that I can do to reduce discrimination.
Secondly, about poverty. Since 1990, extreme poverty rates have been cut by more than half. However, currently, there are about 700 to 800 million people in the world living on less than $1.9 per day. The international poverty line is $1.9 per day. Also, regarding food hunger, there are about 800 million people in the world who suffer from hunger. Particularly, those people are in Africa and South Asia. Food production is not keeping pace with population growth. Currently, these regions are working to change their agriculture systems. And what I think we can do is eliminate food waste. Out of the 4 billion tons of food produced worldwide, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted each year. If this amount of food wasted can be delivered to people in need, we will be one step closer to a better world.
Lastly, about conflict. Can you point your finger on a map to where in the world there are ongoing conflicts? You may point only one or two places. I can’t say that that’s completely correct. More conflicts are occurring around the world. Regarding conflicts, I think what we need to do is to be fully aware of them. If we are to create a peaceful world from now on, I believe we must understand the current state of the world. In this case, I think we should not intervene too much in each conflict. It’s because each conflict arises over issues such as religion and ethnic groups, and it is extremely difficult for us to fully understand them. Also, people who have the right to vote should go to the polls to make their area a peaceful and good area. This is also a quote from Dr. King, “Our lives begin to end the day we decide silent about things that matter.” So, you should be responsible and involved in the local community.
As I have stated above, we should not be passive and should search the current world and do something spontaneously. If we do that, the world will definitely move in a better direction. Currently, there are various problems such as discrimination, poverty, conflict and impact of the coronavirus , but I am confident that once we overcome them, the world that Dr. King hoped for will be waiting for us.
