『Big changes start with small actions.』
Up until now, I have only been involved in the environmental area of the SDGs. Through this volunteer experience, I was able to talk with Cambodian children and gain a lot of knowledge, which made me realize the true meaning of the SDGs and the necessity of realizing a world where everyone, regardless of whether they are from a developed country or a developing country, can receive an adequate education, where differences in environment are eliminated, and where everyone can work hard to achieve what they want to do. I felt it again.
First of all, children should be given equal possibilities. I was born in Japan and have been able to live without any inconvenience. I am very grateful for this. There are children in the world who cannot even get enough water, or who cannot study even if they wanted to. I believe that the SDGs are there to eliminate such conditions and protect the children and the poor of the world. Goals 1, 2, 3, and 46 also speak to this.
The second foundation of the SDGs is coexistence with the environment. This will require the efforts of developed countries. The original goal of the SDGs was set for 2030. There are only eight years left. I wonder how much of the SDGs have been achieved yet. I believe that the SDGs themselves have only just begun to penetrate the public mind, and that the achievement rate is about 10%. However, even in Japan, various companies are paying attention to the SDGs and other eco-friendly points. If this trend continues worldwide and more and more people around the world take individual action, it will be possible to achieve the goals by 2030. In this context, it is necessary for us junior and senior high school students, who will be the future generation in 2030, to take the lead in taking action, and seriously think about the future of the earth and the current state of the earth. I, too, want to take action on a larger scale, rather than limiting myself to what I can do. The generation that will be responsible for the future of the earth needs to do not only what they can do, but also what they can do as a matter of course, and in addition to that, take action for the SDGs. For example, in order to eliminate poverty, we need to provide an environment where local people can work equally, rather than just providing support. There are many things we can do to help, such as purchasing products made under fair trade and FSC-certified MSC-certified products, and spreading this little-known fact around the world.
Through this experience, I once again understood the importance of the SDGs. It was difficult, but through actual experience, I realized that we need to work harder to achieve the SDGs by 2030, which is in the near future, in order to realize a world in which all of our children can have equal access to education and opportunities in a friendly world that coexists with the environment. In order to realize a world where all people can live in harmony with the Earth and have equal access to education and opportunities, we need to work more actively to achieve the SDGs by 2030.
