『What we can do for Cambodia』

(800~1500字でまとめていただく様式です。)

I'm going to talk about my action plan. First, I researched the current state of poverty, health, and welfare in Japan and Cambodia, and then thought about what we can do based on that.
First, I will talk about the current situation of poverty in Cambodia and Japan. The poverty problem in Cambodia has a significant impact on children. For example, street children, child labor, human trafficking, and theft by children are some of the problems. And for every 1,000 babies born in Cambodia in 2021, 25 died before their 5th birthday. 17.8% of the population lived below the national poverty line in 2019. Japan does not appear to be poor, but Japan’s relative poverty rate is the second highest among the G7 countries, following the United States. One in six people in Japan, or more than 21 million people in a country of 128 million are living below the poverty line.
Next, I will talk about the current situation of health and well-being. The average life expectancy in Cambodia is about 70 years old. Cambodia's average life expectancy has risen significantly compared to the past, but Cambodia ranks 137th out of 207 countries, indicating that Cambodia is one of the countries in the world with a relatively low level of "average life expectancy". However, the average life expectancy in Japan is 85 years old, which is the longest in the world. Compared to Cambodia, there is a difference of about 15 years old. Also, Japan has one of the best healthcare systems in the world. However, that does not mean the system is perfect. Japan has also some problems that are high rate of suicide, increase the dementia among of the elderly, shortage of doctors and medical gap.
Based on this information, I thought about what we can do. First, we can join the volunteer or event like “volunteer platform”. By joining the event, it will be the opportunity for us to know their activities deeply and we can know where donations are being used appropriately and where the situation of children is improving.
Second, we can donate for developing countries. There are some support groups. For example, there are Japan Committee for UNICEF and World Vision Japan. UNICEF works in 190 countries and work in the areas of health, nutrition, water and sanitation, education, protection of children from child labor, and emergency and humanitarian assistance to support the lives and healthy growth of children. For example, in Cambodia, we are working to create a safe learning environment for children by conducting teacher training to eliminate violent instruction in schools. World Vision Japan works with children in dire circumstances through development assistance and emergency humanitarian assistance in the areas of health, water and sanitation, livelihoods, education and nutrition in nearly 100 countries.
For example, in Cambodia, we are conducting activities to raise awareness of the health of children under the age of 5 and their mothers and guardians, as well as to ensure access to safe water. Like this we need to donate to support groups that could be trusted.
Third, we can purchase and use of Fairtrade products. A product with the FAIRTRADE Mark means producers and businesses have met internationally agreed standards which have been independently certified. By doing so, we can contribute to the economic development of developing countries. These are my action plans.
